As if clothes weren't expensive enough, then we have to deal with the increase in VAT due in January which only makes the latest news on the rising price of Cotton even more depressing.
Due to the recent hike in prices from 10 cents per lb to 83 cents per lb, due mainly to the recent floods in Pakistan which has wiped out much of the crop, retailers such as Primark, H&M and Next have warned of an increase in prices by as much as 8%. They will no longer be able to continue to sell clothes at knock down prices as cotton is the key material in the cheap clothing ranges we see on the High Street and the price of cotton is now at a 15 year high.
Oh well it looks like we will all be buying wisely in the January Sales!

I agree its depressing. I think we're already paying more than ever. Oh well, like you say time to make the most of the sales. e xx
ReplyDeleteps. not at wk, feel terrible, will tx you tomorrow.
Yes, what a shame we'll have price increases here in the UK in child labour-loving Primark.
ReplyDeleteImagine how furious the people of Pakistan who have lost *everything* in these floods must be on our behalf. The thought of another couple of quid on a shitty pair of cheapo jeans must be too much for them to bear.
Wise up.
Rakerraker - I think you are the one who needs to wise up love, I do not condone the use of child labour on this blog and have never ever bought anything from Primark, nor do I intend to, but I do understand that people on low incomes and students can usually only ever afford to shop there. Its not just Primark who will be putting prices up, it will affect the whole fashion industry and of course we all feel dreadfully sorry for the people in Pakistan (except the ones in Bin Ladens training camps - who blow us up)but this is a fashion blog and therefore anything affecting the industry will be reported on so as I said along with the rise in VAT, things are not going to get easier for any of us, we are not out of the recession yet. We are all entitled to an opinion which is why I always show my comments even if negative, but you didn't have to use the "Wise Up" remark, I am probably a lot older and far wiser than you.
ReplyDeleteMrs Fab I was only going to say indeed hard times ahead but now I must add, opps the 'wise up' remark. Love your reply! xx
ReplyDeleteMrs Fab - maybe we'll see more clothes recycling/remodelling happening if prices go up.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be able to take a blouse from a charity shop and chop it and change it to something that fits the current trends.
But am shit at sewing. One of my other domestic fails. You should see the 'turn ups' that I put on Sonshine's school trousers *burning shame*

Besides the fact that there has never actually been any evidence for Primark usuing child labour!! I just heard Primark were going to take the price increase into their own profit so they dont have to increase prices.
ReplyDeleteHi Mrs. Fab I came here to thank you for your generous spirited gesture (taking the time to get the link & send it to me) and saw this post & my first thought was 'one more way of realising how connected we all are, all around this small planet: one flood, one act of God, can have the most far reaching ripple effects in the smallest of ways, like 8%'.
ReplyDeleteOf course it never occurred to me you didn't care about the people in Pakistan who are devastated by the floods - those countless souls whose lives are turned upside down - but also I guess I was 'wise' enough to know that you're keeping the focus of your blog to fashion. You are not writing a political blog, or a news blog, or even an advocate against child labour blog (I am so tired of hearing that one! It's all whispers and rumours, and that kind of thing always smacks to me of the Salem witch trials).
There have been a few times - not many, surprisingly few - when I've received a comment like 'rakerraker's' (mine are always anonymous, altho in one case, when I started fighting back - defending my position - as you did so beautifully - we actually became friends in the end).
I found early on when I started blogging that while there are all kinds of blogs, all kinds of people who blog for their various reasons, the blogs I visit and the people who visit me - like lovely lovely Pearl, above - seem to all subscribe to a written code that starts with the concept 'If you don't have anything nice to say..' - we can disagree. We can challenge each other. But we do it with grace and dignity and above all, we support each other.
Poor rakerraker must be a pretty angry woman, to want to start a fight with a stranger on her blog, which inself is kind of sad. Kudos to you for not deleting the comment, but standing up for yourself. I hope this doesn't spoil your day. I think you're FABULOUS and I haven't even yet met you. I just like the way you think.
Apologies for the Wise Up comment - that was rude, you're right. I was in such a foul mood this morning and I shouldn't have posted that on your blog without taking a moment to think.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't think you're that much older than me!
Thanks Mrs Dot and a big thanks to rakerraker for her apology which I accept with good grace. All is forgiven. Comments are important to all of us and I am grateful to all of you who take the time to read my posts and comment, without you all, it wouldn't be worth doing. xx
ReplyDeleteGlad to see everyone is friends again, I think we are all a little jittery about the general financial climate here, so let's enjoy ourselves and make wise buys xx
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update. Was attempting to read an article about it over someone's shoulder on the bus this morning, but didn't have specs on! Like you say, this will affect the whole spectrum of stores. It's newsworthy and I'm glad you posted this. xx
