Whilst in town this afternoon I tried on a LWD. I was so excited when I entered our one and only local indie to find one on the rails that fulfilled my LWD critea. Not too short - tick. Not sleeveless - tick. An A-Line style that comes from under the bust - tick and as I pulled the garment from the hanger I could already visualise it being packed in a suitcase Marbella bound, along with an assortment of gold coloured bangles and metallic sandals, but as soon as I put it on, I kinda changed my mind.
I couldn't put my finger on it to be honest, but when I walked out of the changing room and the shop assistant (who I know really well) shook her head in a side to side motion rather than an up and down one, I suppose that did it for me.
It fitted fine across the bust but I felt I could have done with a size smaller from the chest down if I'm honest, it felt like too much fabric hanging in front and at the sides and even though the dress consisted of two layers, it was still extremely transparent, I would have to wear a slip with it, not something I would relish whilst I am either having a "tropical moment" or in 90 degree heat on the Costa's in August.

The dress was £50 and by a Danish brand I have never come across before called Miss Baron who do have some very nice bits on their website although you can't buy online.
I can't help but wonder why finding a white dress is so hard when I already know the answer: If they are casual in style, most of them have skinny little shoulder straps or are fitted to the waist which doesn't suit my apple shape. Either that or they are sleeveless but structured (again doesn't suit my body shape) and are more fitting to a summers day in the boardroom than a walk around Puerto Banus on a balmy summer evening. So its not that there aren't any out there, they are just not age or body shape appropriate!

Do you know I saw a brilliant LWD yesterday either in South Molten St or Bond St. I need tom recall this information. It wasn't dissimilar to one you've posted. I will think on!!
ReplyDeleteOh yes please rack your brains!
DeleteBest buy your LWD in Puerto Banus; as you probably know they have some great boutiques which focus on the Med summer look perfectly .
ReplyDeleteIf I can't find one I shall have to resort to that. Mind you I haven't found one out there before and I go every year! x
DeleteIts a really pretty dress so I hope to succeed in finding the perfect LWD for you. I've been trying to find a nice summer dress that could be perfect for the bar, beach or dress or for night but not had much luck yet. I'm thinking of making one rather than another fruitless search in the shops. xx
ReplyDeleteI have seen some I like but not in white. I saw a lovely aqua patterned one on Debenhams x
DeleteThats a pretty dress. I too want the perfect LWD they are hard to find! I say go back and get it!
ReplyDeletePhase Eight have a really nice one but its sleeveless grrrr. Hope you are well doll x
DeleteI know your struggles! I've been on the prowl for a maxi dress for a few summers now. The problem is maxi-dresses, even those labeled "petite," are for Amazon women (you know those that stand taller than 5'4!) and I end up looking like a little girl playing dress up! This year, I changed my criteria (and am now willing to hem if I have to) and have decided to go with maxi-skirts. So far I have found three (two of which were dirt cheap!) and only one needs to be hemmed. So maybe you should change your criteria and go for the aqua one....with your coloring I bet it would look fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI'm only 5ft 2" and do wear maxi skirts and dresses, I love them for summer but yes length is an issue. For example the ones I have tried on in Next in the past would need about 15 inches chopping off!
DeleteEvery summer since I was I kid I buy a LWD think it has something to do with the timotei commercials in the 19180's and the fact that Midsommar celebrations is BIG are Sweden and all girls where white with flowers in their hair. I saw the perfect one yesterday, by Isabel Marant, look a bit like the one u tried on. X Lisa
ReplyDeleteAw I bet the Isabel Marant dress is gorgeous, I must have a look online to see if I can find it! I remember those Timotei commercials well!
DeleteI love this dress its stunning. I have a crochet one rom last year which I love but I think its a little short for every day wear in the uk.
ReplyDeleteX x
I reckon I will end up getting it!
DeleteWow I think this dress has everything I'd be looking for too! I need sleeves, even little cap ones and I can never resist lace or crochet on anything.
ReplyDeleteI haven't got a white/ivory pencil skirt which is a little impractical but I just love how clean it looks in Summer with a shirt or tee. And a litle cropped navy cardi so will have to raid the kids departments again. Umm, that's it really, I don't have any gaps anywhere, anymore lol!
amazing dress !
ReplyDeleteIt's a very sweet pice, I had to buy me some who look like that for this summer...
There will always be gaps in my wardrobe (probably pyschological!) Why is it I try things on in the dressing room and when I get home they dont look the same? Is it the mirrors? Like you my boobs dont support spaggetti straps anymore! How fed up am I sometimes of trying to find something for my style, my figure, not necessarily age appropriate but.......you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteWhite dress is a must have for summer! I really love this one!

Move over the LBD, it's all about the LWD! I think it makes a great refreshing change. Although you need a bit of a tan to wear white well I think - you don't want to look washed out (not that you have that problem ;)). I love how classic a white dress can be, and they are so versatile - easily dressed up, or down x
ReplyDeleteGreat blog and love reading the readers comments too! highlarious !! Oh so many things are needed in my wardrobe for summer........that long kimono jacket with fringe detailing in burnout black........the fringe bag I am still looking for.......the perfect pair of heeled ankle boots in buff.......the list is endless. Good luck to you on your white dress hunt!
ReplyDeleteLooks a great dress - just my style, but no where to buy online! ;-(
