Get Shorty.

One thing that my summer wardrobe is crying out for this year is new shorts.  I never managed to buy the stone or black city shorts my wardrobe was crying out for last year and ended up grabbing a more casual looking option just before my holiday.  As for my denim shorts, they must be at least 5 years old and are so faded, both from sunshine and washing, that they are not fit for wearing this year.
I know they are not for everyone but I love to wear shorts in the warmer weather either at home or abroad, in both smart and casual styles, but there are certain age appropriate rules that I adopt when buying and treat the length of them just as I would when buying a skirt or dress (never too short) but I do make one exception, my shorts are always above the knee, unlike my dresses, but I wear them as close as possible and leave the short shorts and denim cut off's to my daughters, Sharon Stone and Elle McPherson.

These ladies prove that with great legs and a bucket load of confidence, you can get away with anything, even in your 40's and 50's but I am going to stick with the longer versions!

Sportmax shorts £170, Matches. Denim Turn up shorts £27.50, Marks and Spencer. Nicole Fahri shorts £115, mywardrobe

Smart or casual, will you be wearing shorts this summer?

  1. I think that shorts can be really stylish. You are right though about certain styles being age appropriate.

Sharon Stone has styled hers really well. I would've expect the boots to look heavy against her bare legs but they don't at all.

  3. I like to wear them in summer too, so much better than a mini skirt. I think they can still look age appropriate if they are looser. My faves are the Nicole Fahri ones.

  4. Definitely will be wearing shorts, but not too short at my age. I have a couple of knee length pairs and a couple of above knee pairs. I love 'city' shorts wih heels flats a tee and a casual jacket. So many ways to wear them.

  5. Being from "the South" I LIVE in shorts during the weekend and on vacation; it's truly too warm to do otherwise - yes, I admit, sometimes it's all about comfort. Short shorts are a major no-no for me; but I find that the longer ones (to - or right above the knee) do my short stature no favors either, so I'm constantly on the look out for ones that are "just right."

  6. I have only just started wearing shorts myself in England; took a lot for me to do so - I've always felt weird wearing shorts when not abroad. Abroad I have no problem! Odd eh? Self conscious clearly... I love girls in shorts, especially when they dress them up with a blazer, and heels! x

  7. Love shorts too! Right now, I can't even imagine not wearing socks though:) I guess I could pull the Sharon Stone look and wear them with boots! x LZ

  8. I live in jeans and on a hot day love to put on a pair of shorts as still feel the security of a nice pair of jeans around the waist. Teamed with flats and a tunic top and long cardigan, they seem much less 'look at me' than a denim skirt. However length is key knee length if unflattering for all but supermodels and cheek baring... Enough said! H & m do some nice cotton ones which can be rolled and buttoned to the perfect length, for me it is somewhere around mid thigh.

  10. If I was abroad I would have no problem because my legs tan well, but not so sure I would get away with it here relying on the faux glow!! However I do like white linen shorts that stop just above the knee worn with silky vests...great for casual daywear or with lots of accessories for evening style!

  11. Funnily enough I've never worn shorts in the city since living in Spain. Here, Spanish women never wear shorts apart from at the beach. So to avoid looking like a "tourist" wherever I go, I've avoided wearing them ;-) I'm sure I'll wear them more when I return to the UK ;-) I really like the M&S version.

  12. Used to love shorts, but actually find on-the-knee skirts a much cooler and more flattering outfit in the summer. Recent favourites are from RM Williamson, that well-known bush outfitter in Australia - but I buy them on the Bond Street - (unless I'm on a trip down-under).

  13. I bought a pair of cycling short length denim shorts from Gap last summer, I wasn't convinced at the time but I thought they would be good for the NY heat. I wore them heaps and I can't wait to wear them again this summer. I like them because they are a little different and they always remind me of Carrie's cut offs in SATC too - I always like her casual looks!
