Departure Lounge Chic.

With all this talk of packing for holidays and choosing your outfits for a week away in the sun, has left little time to think about what to wear to the Airport.

So when it comes to travelling abroad, how do you prefer to dress for the plane journey?  There are so many things to take into consideration when it comes to planning your Departure Lounge outfit, after all, you could leave the UK on a boiling hot day in shorts and vest top and arrive home two weeks later to torrential rain and flooding, so it is not always an easy task.

Comfort should be of the utmost importance. Personally I avoid heels and jeans when travelling and always opt for flat sandals and comfortable loose fit bottoms.  I could of course wear a hat like Victoria but mine would be my beach panama and only because it won't fit in my case!

I know that most seasoned long haul travellers will insist on a scarf or pashmina to keep warm on the flight, but when you are going to be arriving at a hot european destination, it is the last thing I would want wrapped around my neck as I disembark in temperatures of 30+degrees!

Going long haul, then sunglasses are a must to conceal eye bags.  Short haul daytime arrivals to hot destinations also call for some protection from the sun, so these are a must wear item.

I don't think I will be arriving like the "Towie" girls, all fake lashes, heels and bare legs, I bet they were freezing on the plane!

Instead I shall opt for something far more comfortable and less glam but hopefully still chic, I had better get something sorted!

Do you have a fail safe travel outfit option?

  1. The worst flight ever was leaving South Africa in the middle of ahot summer and the temp was around 32 C and arriving in Germany to a white wonderland and the temp was about -2 C. System shock.

I do find that if you're on an overnight flight, the plane gets really cold and a pashmina is a great addition which you can roll and stow in your bag. Jeans are a heck no ... but so are cheap track pants.

With leggings being in, I'd go for a pair of those. When I did a lot of travel between Europe and SA I wore a nylon stretch blend (I was also very skinny back then lol) and could get away with it.

  2. Long haul - I have been known to wear a pair of jogging bottoms .... a long long time ago and they weren't even fashionable ones. But I was going to Hong Kong and that is a long flight and I blended in beautifully with the locals when I got there. My current post shows my last flight outfit and yes - it was a pair of jeans - but the comfiest pair of jeans I own - so not tight and I didn't feel trussed up and it was only 3 hours. Love Victoria's trench but that outfit looks like hard work. Nothing worse than having to pull down too short skirts when sitting down.

  3. I always wear flats, take some sort of thin rainproof coat (pacamacs are much better these days) and tie a cardigan round my neck as a scarf just in case.

  4. I always find the decision what to wear on the plane a complete nightmare because whilst wanting to look good and stylish, I also have to be comfortable. Plus you can never tell if the plane is going to be too cold or too hot - it never seems to anything in between.

Can't wait to see what you opted for - I'm going away again later this month and could do with some ideas!

  5. I just can't wear what these ladies have on. I'm guessing they're either on business or first class so in that case, they can always change before being pounced on by the pap. I often travel between two time zones. *sigh* Hot to cold and vice versa. I tend to layer my clothes.

I throw caution to the wind if I'm doing short haul flights. In which case, I just wear pants with elastic band, no obvious metal bits so that I go through the machines without them beeping.

  6. loose linen trousers, vest and cardi. I do like a pashmina too - you can always fit it into a carry-on bag if your destination is too hot to wear it.

  7. Depends if long or short haul. Comfortable trousers usually, tee shirt, cardigan (light weight)- alternatively a maxi with something for my shoulders, as the air con can sometimes be too cool. Low heeled sandals or ballet flats, sunglasses. I dont bother with hats generally on the plane, it usually ends up getting crushed in the overhead bin!

  8. i must admit to taking a pashmina with me. I trend to get really cold on the flight so it acts as a blanket, but then gets put away until the flight home. the same with hats as they need no extra luggage space then. For me I have to be comfy, but not too relaxed that I looks a mess. We have been lucky enough in the past to have been upgraded on flights and I don't think we would have been should we have been in tracksuit bottoms and a hoody.

  9. I never wear jeans either. It's always a simple dress with stretch, flats or ankle boots. I did have to take a pair of gloves earlier this year as it was freezing early morning but luckily not really exposed to the elements for long at any point until home.

  10. If I'm going somewhere hot a maxi dress is one of my travel outfits with a jacket so warm enough for the uk but cool enough for the hot destination. If not I have jeans that roll up to make clam diggers so wear them with a nice top and jacket so again I'm warm enough in the uk but cool in the hot country xxx
