Does size matter?

Now don't click away after reading the title of this post because I am only talking about one of my favourite things here - handbags.

Rumour has it that the bigger the bag, the thinner you look, but is it a fail safe optical illusion? Personally I think not, and the notion had nothing to do with my recent gigantic tote purchase, I just love a big handbag and believe that the reason Victoria Beckham looks teeny tiny next to her giant handbags, is basically because she is teeny tiny, its her diet doing the work not her handbag.
I haven't suddenly began to look like a size 10 when I carry a large bag, it is more a case of the advice a florist might give to a bride, if you are tall or overweight you will look better with a large bouquet whereas a petite bride would be swamped by a huge floral arrangement. Surely it is all a question of balance?

The size of your handbag does help in one area of your appearance however, and that is age.  A large tote gives an overall youthful appearance unlike the frumpy small shoulder bags much favoured by our mothers who don't carry mobile phones, lipstick, baby wipes or Kindle's and although there will be times when a small handbag is essential whatever your age, you may not look smaller with a piece of arm candy of gigantic proportions but you won't have to leave anything at home!

Clockwise from top left: Diane Von Furstenburg at The Outnet was £340.00 Now £169.99. Anya Hindmarch Palma tote was £595 now £297.50. John Lewis Collection Tote £39. Lou Tote from Reiss £245. Jigsaw Leather Tote was £139 now £69.

Do you think large tote bags make you look slimmer or more youthful?

  3. No they don't make me look slimmer or taller. I just look like a midget with a big bag. But it doesn't stop me carrying them though. I did send one back last year despite loving it because I had to concede you couldn't see much of me - just the bag.

  4. Great looking bags! Here's the thing though...my aging shoulders can no longer tolerate a big *heavy* bag. On weekends I now run errands with only a small crossbody bag. Workdays I have my tote, but am careful not to load it up too much.

  5. At least 3 of these photos look like they have been taken in airports, so technically, they are not handbags, but carry-on baggage. A giant handbag like that says to me sore shoulders, and back-ache! Carry on, or baby-palaver bag, yes; everyday bag, NO! Won't make you look slimmer at all. Ridiculous!

  6. Hi there!! I love a big bag and am just starting to experiment with them more. I suppose they do make you look slightly slimmer but this may be more noticeable in summer without all the bulky coats and layers that have to be worn at the moment! Love the John Lewis bag, it's a great shade of tan and a good size too!

  7. When working as an Image Consultant we were always taught to keep accessories especially handbags to scale. That is if you were tall and big boned a larger handbag and if petite a smaller one. I think style of bag is more important than size when you are older.

  9. I do love big bags, but VB's bags look more like overnight bags/small suitcases. They look so uncomfortable to carry.

  11. I've never really thought about how my bag makes me look! I do like bigger bags for everyday though(to carry all my rubbish around - and I carry a lot of rubbish around! )but some of Victoria's look a bit too big to me? xx

  12. I love big handbags and have never really given much thought to whether they make me look slimmer or not .. I'm guessing not! To be honest however, I think that Victoria Beckham looks slightly ridiculous with her huge bags. She often looks like she's about to topple over! Love the DVF that you featured.

  13. I'm going to have to go with you. Large bags don't tend to help you look stick thin, but I'm still quite happy to keep kidding myself! Have a good weekend. Kat x

  14. I just love handbags, end of! Was told by a teacher at LCF a handbag should be proportional to you but personally, I love all shapes and sizes so have ignored her, oops! Each to their own I say! x
