Basics and replacements - the classic white shirt.

It was a couple of years ago now that I did a series of post's entitled "Wednesdays Wardrobe Staple". The whole point of the series was to talk about the items every woman should have in her wardrobe, the building blocks that stylish outfits can be built around and having long been a lover of  the "Parisian Chic" way of dressing and the simplicity a few key pieces can bring to wardrobe, I felt  it only right that as we all start to think about spring cleaning the house, it could well be the right time to think about spring cleaning our closets in a concious effort to make a shopping list of essentials that won't just see you through the new season, but way beyond.
It is so easy to fall in love with new season collections, colours and micro trends that buying an essential grey marl t-shirt can begin to feel like a chore as you hand over your cash rather begrudingly, but it is time to educate ourselves into knowing that if we get the basic's right, the rest will follow and we can then allow ourselves an impulse purchase or two.
As much as I have waxed lyrical (for the last four years I might add) about the classic white shirt or the breton top, I don't always take my own advice and there are still certain items I have failed to secure which in my head will bring my whole wardrobe together with ease.  The other point I would like to bring in to these posts is that of replacement.  Sure we all have a pair of dark skinny jeans but nothing last's forever and these core pieces if you have them, will at some point need replacing and something I recommended four years ago will no longer be available, so now feels like the perfect time to update, show what is currently available in addition to giving the series the new name of "Basics and Replacements". I know how hard it was for one of my daughters having to replace a pair of jeans last week when all she wanted to do was buy something pretty or on trend but it had to be done, she could never function without a pair of dark skinnies and nor could I.
I intend to take the current season into account and cover the style staples that every woman should own.  I will cover options for all budgets plus idea's on how to style these key pieces.

  1. What a brilliant idea for a post. Loved this. Yes, I'm guilty ... I have a perfect white shirt from Sisley which is fitted and so goes beautifully under knitwear. You're right; it needs to be replaced and I resent spending the money on something I already have. Guess I'll have to re-think that plan:)

  2. I have one on my wish list. For such a basic - it's unbelievably hard to find the perfect one. Part of me says that white shirts look amazing on everyone else but not me or maybe they just don't look the way I want them to. I will keep trying though.

  3. I love the look of a white shirt, but I find it difficult to find the perfect fit as I'm short and curvy (not plus-size though). Usually they end up gaping at the bust. I do have my eyes on a cream silk shirt though, that might work:)

  4. I love your blog dearly, and read every post, but please sort out your apostrophes. Basics is a plural, and doesn't need one.

  5. Hi my dear! I thrifted a crepe de chine M&S one, sort of Equipmment style with short sleeves. I like seeing how other people wear them and they do look great with skinny jeans! Great post as usual, basics are such a style necessity! xx

  6. I have a silk white shirt that doesn't need ironing. Love it. The jeans on that top girl are quite mesmerisingly perfect aren't they, high but not too high. Also POsh's son look exactly like her! Same nose everything. I guess a white shirt is always perfect, you notice in fash mags they always put families in them.

  7. I'd almost given up looking for the perfect white shirt (I'm not a shirt girl really, don't like lapels...wierd!) until I found a fitted, slightly gathered, leg of mutton style from H and M last year...feel so chic when I wear it and its not bulky at all. Love it...it's just a question of inning the right style.

  9. I have two white shirts one long sleeved and one short but I only seem to wear them for work sometimes - don't know why because they look great with jeans (on other people anyway!). Going to try them with my skinnies now (well not exactly right now - but tomorrow) - you've inspired me! xx

  12. Thanks for this! I'm trying to put a co-ordinated wardrobe together as part of my 'happiness project' (looking like a sack of potatoes isn't making me remotely happy) and I need all the inspiration I can get from your blog.

  14. I always have a white shirt in my wardrobe and I think it's worth paying a bit more for a good quality one. A crisp white shirt always looks good with a pair of jeans. You've included a good range here too.

  15. I have a tighty whity that I bought years ago, a sort of stretchy cotton that is really fitted but miraculously doesn't gape on the buttons, you have inspired me, I am going to hunt it out tomorrow. Great pics by the way xx

  16. I have an el cheapo I bought in Devon for a fiver, and I love it (more even than a silk Chanel one that my mum gave to me) It is fitted, waisted and lycra cotton but doesn't gape at the buttons. I have worn it for years, this has inspired me to hunt it out tomorrow. I love your blog by the way your pics are brilliant (this may be a duplicate as I seem to have lost first comment) x

  17. I know exactly what you mean - I have many pieces in my closet that need to be replaced....but the thought of spending on what I already have is killing me. Starting tomorrow, all those pieces will be placed in the box for Goodwill (our local charity) and I WILL start replacing them.

  18. I would love top wear a white shirt but having a larger bust than my frame and waist would suggest they never fit right.

  19. I have two classic white shirts because I tend to buy two of everything that I love. Nearly every piece of clothing I own is a classic, basic pieces. Purchasing two at a time usually means I don't have to replace for awhile.
I'm new to your site (linked through Small Fabric of my Life) and I enjoy it very much.
